Rapid Chiller Hire Keeps Major UK Fruit Distributor Running
Newsome has successfully delivered and commissioned a 750kW temporary chiller system in under 72 hours to support a leading UK tropical fruit importer and distributor following the unexpected failure of an existing unit.
The client, one of the most well-known and respected names in the UK fresh produce sector, supplies premium bananas and tropical fruit to some of the country’s biggest retailers. With over 75 years of industry heritage, the business operates large-scale, temperature-controlled ripening and distribution facilities where environmental conditions are critical to product quality and supply continuity. When their on-site chiller failed, the Newsome team was contacted to provide a fast, reliable, and energy-efficient cooling solution that could be rapidly deployed with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations.
From First Call to Commissioning in Just Three Days
Newsome delivered an NR-750 air-cooled chiller to the site on 4th August 2025, and the system was up and running by 6th August, thanks to a well-coordinated response from the company’s hire and engineering teams. The NR-750 chiller, which has a nominal capacity of 750kW, was configured to operate at 550kW to match the cooling requirements of the facility’s fruit ripening rooms. This high-efficiency unit features quadruple independent refrigeration circuits, robust scroll compressors, and a wide operating range—making it ideally suited to demanding food processing environments.
Chosen for Speed, Performance and Energy Efficiency
The client selected Newsome based not only on speed of delivery but also on the energy efficiency of the equipment and the reputation of the team. With an EER of 3.3 and utilising R454B Low GWP Refrigerant, the NR-750 offers significant performance and environmental advantages over older chiller models, helping to reduce energy costs during the hire period. As part of the ongoing hire agreement, Newsome also provides technical support, including remote assistance and engineer response within four hours in the event of any faults that can’t be resolved by phone.
With the client continuing to review long-term replacement options, the NR-750 chiller remains in place on a flexible long-term hire basis, ensuring complete operational continuity. The unit was supplied with all required hoses and adaptors for seamless integration and has proven to be a resilient, efficient solution for temperature control in a time-critical application.
