Newsome Delivers Zone-Specific HVAC Solution for International Bakery in Liverpool

Newsome has successfully completed a major HVAC project at a large international bakery in Liverpool, supporting the site’s ongoing investment in production quality, hygiene control, and employee comfort. The project, commissioned as part of a broader site improvement programme, required the design and installation of a fully zoned ventilation and air conditioning system tailored to the unique requirements of each production area. Following a detailed site survey and review of the client’s User Requirement Specification (URS), the Newsome team proposed a three-zone HVAC solution for the bakery’s B-Block, covering the Process Area, Oven Hall, and Packing Section. Each zone had specific temperature, humidity, and air volume targets that required a dedicated system to ensure consistent environmental control and regulatory compliance.

Process Area Solution

The Process Area previously lacked mechanical ventilation altogether. Newsome installed a high-capacity packaged rooftop cooling system using R454B refrigerant, providing over 260 kW of cooling. A high-efficiency desiccant dehumidifier was also introduced to control humidity post-washdown and maintain a safe, dry working environment.

Oven Hall Solution

The Oven Hall’s original fan system was in poor condition, requiring a full upgrade. Newsome supplied a bespoke air handling unit (AHU) with EC fan technology and integrated fresh air and recirculation controls, delivering over 15,000 m³/hr of airflow while maintaining positive pressure to safeguard product integrity.

Packing Section Solution

For the Packing Section, another rooftop packaged unit was installed, offering more than 210 kW of cooling and variable fan speed control. The unit ensures constant air quality and energy efficiency while maintaining strict temperature parameters around sensitive packaging operations.

Each system was designed with sustainability in mind, using R454B – a low-GWP chiller refrigerant – across all installations. R454B offers a significantly reduced environmental impact compared to traditional refrigerants, supporting both current and future regulatory compliance. Installation was carefully coordinated to avoid disruption to ongoing production. The external plant was lifted into place using crane and Hiab equipment, followed by phased internal ductwork and commissioning. The project was completed on time and to specification, with all systems now fully operational.

This project reinforces Newsome’s reputation for delivering high-performance HVAC solutions in the food manufacturing sector. The new systems provide improved air quality, reliable temperature control, and long-term resilience to support the client’s operational needs.
